What is momentum trading?

Momentum trading is buying (or shorting) a stock that is already moving and riding the continuation, rather than guessing a turn in advance. The idea is simple: a stock with real volume behind a move tends to keep going in the short term more often than a quiet one does.

The hard part is catching it early. By the time a big move is obvious on the chart, much of it is gone. The volume gets loud first, which is why traders watch it before price.

How to find momentum stocks

The dependable early signal is relative volume (RVOL): current volume divided by the average volume for that exact minute of the day. An RVOL of 3x is three times the normal pace.
