- What is a gap in stock trading?
- A gap is the difference between a stock's regular-session opening price and the prior day's closing price. A gap up opens higher than yesterday's close; a gap down opens lower. This scanner ranks the biggest gaps from Friday, Sep 18 among liquid stocks (price of $1+ and at least $1M in dollar volume), split-adjusted so a stock split never shows as a fake gap.
- What does it mean when a gap "fills"?
- A gap fills when the price trades all the way back to the prior close during the session, for a gap up, the day's low reaches the prior close; for a gap down, the day's high reaches it. A gap that never returns to the prior close "held." Filled vs held is shown as a badge on every row, because whether a gap holds is one of the most-watched tells for gap-and-go versus fade setups.
- What is a gap and go?
- Gap and go is a day-trading setup where a stock gaps up on a catalyst and keeps running from the open instead of filling the gap. The "o/o" figure on each row shows how the stock finished versus its open, a positive number on a gap up means it held or extended off the open (a gap-and-go tendency), while a negative number means it faded.
- Why do stocks gap up or down?
- The usual catalysts are earnings, guidance, FDA or clinical news, analyst rating changes, mergers, and overnight macro or futures moves. Because most of the reaction happens before the open, the gap captures the market's repricing in a single number. This page is information, not investment advice.
