Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about after-hours movers and after-hours trading on TheDesperateTrader.

What are after-hours movers?
After-hours movers are the stocks with the biggest price change during the after-hours session (4:00–8:00 PM ET), after the regular market closes. This page ranks the top after-hours gainers and losers by their move versus the same day's 4 PM close, from Wednesday, Aug 5, filtered to liquid names (price of $1+ and at least $75K in after-hours dollar volume).
What time is the after-hours session?
The US after-hours (post-market) session runs from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM ET, after the regular session closes at 4:00 PM. Most after-hours volume clusters in the first hour (4:00–5:00 PM ET), when companies release earnings and other market-moving news.
Why do stocks move after hours?
The most common catalyst is earnings, the majority of companies report after the close, so a beat or miss can move a stock sharply in after-hours trading. Guidance changes, FDA and clinical news, mergers, and analyst actions released after 4 PM also drive after-hours moves. Because after-hours volume is thin, prices can swing hard and do not always hold into the next open.
Can I trade stocks after hours?
Yes, most brokers allow after-hours trading during set hours, but be aware of the risks: wider bid-ask spreads, lower liquidity, and larger price swings than regular hours. Always use limit orders after hours. This page is information, not investment advice.
How often does this update?
It refreshes every minute during the live after-hours session. Outside after-hours it shows the most recent post-market session, and you can watch real-time unusual-volume alerts across the rest of the site.
