Why volume matters

Volume is confirmation. A price move on heavy volume means real participation is behind it, and moves with real participation tend to hold better than moves on thin volume, which can reverse as fast as they came. That is why traders read volume before they trust a move.

The catch is that raw volume alone is misleading. The biggest companies trade the most shares every single day whether or not anything is happening, so a raw-volume list shows the same giants over and over.

High volume vs most active

This scanner ranks by relative volume (RVOL): current volume divided by the stock's own average for that exact minute of the day. An RVOL of 3x is three times the normal pace, so the names that surface are the ones genuinely reacting today, not just the usual mega-caps.
