What "in play" really means

A stock is in play when the market is paying attention to it right now: volume is well above normal, the range is wider than usual, and there is usually a reason behind it. That combination is what gives a day trader something to work with intraday.

The opposite is a stock drifting on light volume with no catalyst. It might be a fine long-term hold, but there is nothing there to trade today. In play is a statement about now, not about the company.

How to find stocks in play

The dependable early signal is relative volume (RVOL): current volume divided by the average for that exact minute of the day. When a name comes into play the volume jumps first, so ranking every U.S. stock by RVOL surfaces the in-play names as it happens.
